My mission as an educator extraordinare is to teach my students until they have mastered or at least display competence in the subject matter at hand. I strongly believe that a great teacher can teach anyone. Student performance is mostly the responsibility of the teacher, not the student. As an educator, I utilize many methods to get my students to absorb information and to perform on or above level. My success rate is attributed to tailoring each course to the individual learner’s needs in progressive steps. Not only do my protégés’ learn the specified subject, but they also learn transferable skills and principles to succeed in other areas of their lives.
For instance, as an American Red Cross Swim Instructor Trainer, I have taught handicap children and adults to swim in the open ocean as well as gain confidence in everyday life. One of my students is blind, and learned to swim the freestyle and the breaststroke so well that she started to swim away from the cove of the beach into open ocean and the boating lane. Not wanting to take away her independence and confidence of being able to go the beach, I had to spend more time teaching her to listen for the waves and judge distances. Today, she can swim in the ocean with very minimal assistance from Mom.
Then there are the marginalized at risk children from poor performing schools who were under my tutelage. They are now either in college or have just been accepted in college. One boy, Christopher who failed the sixth grade twice is an example. I worked with the school officials on his IEP and I was his after school tutor. He is now in the eleventh grade taking advance Math and honors English. Then was Susan, who in the fifth grade couldn’t write well nor speak well has just been accepted at USF.
I grew up in Pennsylvania; attended Archbishop Prendergast High where I participated in
Orchestra, Band, Cross Country; Yearbook; and Newspaper. Upon graduation, I attended West Chester Uniiversity where I participated in orchestra and band; and graduated with an AAS Degree in Educational Media. Then I attended Temple University, received a BA in Communications. While at Temple, I won the appointment of the yearbook editor twice by the Vice President of the 30,000 student university.
Upon graduation from Temple, I worked three years as a Care Manager for PCA writing care plans and coordinating services for fragile persons. During that time I volunteered teaching life skills and GED skills to people from the housing projects. Many students have become ei homeowners, graduating from places such as Penn State; Drexel and U of Penn.
From care manager, I embarked on my career as educator: I worked with children in Mexico, Canada, Africa and Carribbean. In the Virgin Islands I directed an afterschool program and camping program for at risk children. I founded the Marine Kids Korps , Inc, an aquatics camp for disabled adults and children on the beach. As I a Rotarian, I help create a program entitled ENRICH. It links at risk children with professional people who mentor them. I also managed a program called the Seastars for traumatized children.
I love to swim, scuba dive, sail , read, hike and train dogs. I hold certifications as a Lifeguard Instructor; Water Safety Instructor Trainer and CPR Instructor Trainer. I also have taught gift students at a private school . Ninety-Eight percent of students scored above grade level in Reading, Math and Writing. I desire to teach students from 6 months to 100 years old to swim including disabled persons, particularly children in wheelchairs. Also, I desire to tutor students to master or at least obtain competency in their subject matter.
