About

I am a licensed and experienced high school science teacher with a passion for science education. My main areas of expertise are chemistry and physics, but I have taught earth and environmental science and physical science. I also worked for several years as an industrial chemist. My first undergraduate degree was from the University of Virginia (highest distinction, Phi Beta Kappa), followed by a masters degree from Duke University (Divinity, magna cum laude). A career change took me to North Carolina State for a dual BS/BA degree in Biochemistry/ Chemistry (cum laude). I presently teach high school chemistry, AP chemistry, and physics.
I enjoy talking about science; I enjoy sharing my interest with young people as they are searching for their own path and reaching for their goals. Aside from classroom instruction, I hold regular remediation sessions for students in my school, and have done outside, in home, tutoring for homebound students. My goal is always to unfold what may be challenging, complicated material into cleaner, more manageable segments for students to comprehend. As much as possible, I try to bring analogies from more familiar subjects into the discussion of science. I am familiar with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for high school science, and my students consistently score well on the end-of-course exams (chemistry >85%; phyiscs >95%).
I am married with two sons, one studying engineering at Syracuse University, and another a senior in high school.
