 About Jamie:
If you are having trouble with reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, or writing skills, I'm the tutor for you! I am currently teaching in a private Christian school here in Jacksonville, Florida, but I have nearly ten years of teaching experience in public school, private school, and in one-on-one tutoring environments. I have also taught several college courses ranging from ENC 0001 through LIT 2000. I have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education from Valdosta State University and a Master’s Degree in English from the University of North Florida. In both schools, I was the top student in my class and earned many awards for scholarship. I have published three articles in various scholarly journals and have presented papers at conferences both here in the United States and abroad.

I am technologically savvy and can help with Microsoft Office products as well as with research strategies and techniques. I am also highly skilled with the rules of MLA and APA style, and if you need help with another citation system, I can help you figure it out! I truly enjoy knowledge and research, and I’ll help you become better at it in your own studies.

I currently hold a Florida teaching certification in English for grades six through twelve, but I can also assist you with other subjects such as music and history. History is one of my great loves, particularly the history of the American Revolution. Also, I am a classically trained musician who currently plays the French horn in my church orchestra, so if you are in search of some musical guidance, I’d love to help!

So you can see, I’m a bit of a renaissance gal. I love learning for myself, but I also am passionate about helping others to acquire new knowledge. I’d love to meet you and to help you start on your own path to scholarship!

Learn More About Jamie's Experience:
general music
I have been a musician since I was a child. I have played the piano, flute, and viola; however, the majority of my musical training has taken place on the French horn. I can read in all clefs, but am most proficient in treble. I attended many summer camps and sessions at Florida State University while in high school and participated in marching band all the way through college. In fact, I planned on being a band director until English took over as the primary love of my life. I have taught several students during summer band camps in both musical and marching fundamentals, and I can honestly say music is much a part of me as writing and reading. I currently play in my church orchestra with my husband who is a trombone player and holds a degree in musical performance.
grammar
I have always thought grammar to be the most difficult of all the elements of English; however, I truly learned it from the ground up during the year in which I taught seventh grade reading and writing. Getting down to brass tacks and forcing myself to learn the material well enough to teach it to others helped me to truly own the material for the first time. Now, I like to encorporate it into every class I each as it has always proven to be a weak point in each student's learning. I took several classes in grammar during my time at Valdosta State University, culminating in a class called ENC 3080, Advanced Grammar and Mechanics. It was a tough course, but one that taught me much not only about what was correct, but also why it was! I find grammar challenging and enjoyable, and with each year I teach, I come to understand the value of gramatical structure in reading comprehension, writing and speaking clarity, and organization. I feel it is a subject severely lacking in our text messaging world.
