About

Doing college-level writing instruction has been my favorite experience in English Graduate school. My favorite part-time job outside of school has been tutoring students from ages three to fourteen in speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and reading comprehension. I worked for a skills acceleration program called Kumon (www.kumon.com). I have also had plenty of experience privately tutoring ESL for people from ages 18 to 42. I come highly recommended by my ESL students and the Kumon program. I earned my BA in English from the University of Illinois in 2005 and am currently earning my MA in English at the University of Oregon. More than anything, I look forward to more experience tutoring students. While I enjoy instruction in general, I have made the most progress with individual students in the tutor setting. I have also had thorough schooling in the visual arts, am extremely talented at drawing, and would also delight in the opportunity to instruct visual arts as well. |

For many years I have had a private drawing tutor of my own, so I have had extensive experience in observing an exceptional tutor. I am a talented drawer myself, of portraiture in particular; I have always excelled in visual arts classes in school, have a very solid repertoire of visual art theory, and have a very keen critical eye. If there is an area that an artist is struggling in, I recognize precisely what it is, and can tell what the artist is doing, from observation to their motor skills to their technique. I also do not hold rigid conceits about what good art is. My tutoring technique would be centered on diverse exposure (strengthening the artist's weaker areas plus giving the artist new ideas), and recognizing and fostering the artist's natural style.

grammar
|
Being an English M.A. student, I am well-versed in the particulars of academic grammar and the scholastic writing style. I also excel in the ability to explain grammatical functions, as I have had years of experience explaining the mechanics of English on a very fundamental level, both to ESL students, and to students who found that grammar did not come naturally to them. Instead of using abstract descriptions which muddy the issue, I used metaphor, analogy, and concrete descriptions, all of which helped them greatly. I also welcome the opportunity to work with a student on advanced grammar.
