 About Alan:
Started piano lessons at a young age but really became more serious as a teenager being part of a relatively accomplished rock band. Later studied solfege under the acclaimed chamber music conductor Jorge Cordoba in Mexico City which led him to enroll in the CIEM. After a few years of classical training in that music academy, was awarded full tuition scholarship by Berklee College of Music and headed for Boston, MA. Upon graduating Berklee in 1997, has being leading, for the past 12 years, an alternating triple life of composing, performing and recording music for theater, film and advertising as well as performing in jazz groups and teaching. Has been featured countless times in radio, newspapers and other media and has been part of a long list of established groups and performing artists. Alan is a dedicated teacher who has campaigned to do basically one thing, to simplify. Music is one of those art forms surrounded by mysticism and buried in complexity. Alan prooves this wrong time and time again with his mission of continually clarifying something that is, in nature, simple, yet so misunderstood that is usually taught in truly exotic ways. He has done this out of personal experience. He takes his approach from the best teachers who taught him, and these were many. This, and a deep understanding of psychology and education make him a fail-safe choice among the many.

Learn More About Alan's Experience:
composition (music)
I am a Berklee College of Music graduate and my biggest strength is composition. Have composed a great number of works in all styles. From the most academic like 2-part and 3-part fugues, symphonies, canons, inventions, rondos etc. to the most avant-garde and contemporary like jazz, trios, big band, jazz vocal groups etc. to the most commercial like pop songs, hip hop, dance tracks, jingles, spots etc. to the most exotic like Chinese, Jewish, Arabic music etc. Composing is my biggest passion and I have been trained formally to do so. I have done film scores, music for theater and documentaries. I have almost 20 years experience composing and arranging. I also have analyzed and transcribed many scores and recordings of the greatest composers, orchestrators and arrangers. As well as have relevant knowledge in music history and ethnomusicology. I believe I can teach this subject because I am experienced and qualified in it. I also believe I can teach this subject because I am an experienced teacher and my teaching method focuses on clarity and simplicity.
ear training
I am a Berklee College of Music graduate and one of my biggest strengths is ear training. I received formal studies in ear training for my degree in Berklee. Berklee uses the movable do system and conservatories use the fixed do system. I have been trained in both systems, reason being that before going to Berklee, I studied composition and solfege in an European style conservatory. Also, I am a jazz musician and we use our ears all the time which provides the continuous experience and development within my profession. I have personally transcribed a significant amount of music from recordings and I have a lot of experience with scoring transcription arrangements. I have experience as a composer, pianist, accompanist, vocal coach and singer so there is the obvious need for sight-singing. I believe I can teach this subject because I am experienced and qualified in it. I also believe I can teach this subject because I am an experienced teacher and my teaching method focuses on clarity and simplicity.
music theory
I am a Berklee College of Music graduate and my biggest strength is composition and arranging. I am also jazz improviser and have worked as a jazz performer for over 20 years. As a composer and I have done jingles, film scores, music for theater and documentaries. As a composer and arranger, music theory is a must. I have been formally trained in composition and have thorough knowledge in the creative and mechanics of music for that purpose. As a jazz improviser music theory is necessary for survival in the bandstand. My knowledge and approach in this area is hands-on and on the job experience as well as having received formal training in college. To improvise over a known composition requires knowledge capacity to analyze it, for this you need theory. I have almost 20 years experience composing and arranging as well as performing and improvising on my instrument. I also have analyzed and transcribed many scores and recordings of the greatest composers, orchestrators and arrangers. As well as have relevant knowledge in music history and ethnomusicology. I believe I can teach this subject because I am experienced and qualified in it. I also believe I can teach this subject because I am an experienced teacher and my teaching method focuses on clarity and simplicity.
piano
I am a Berklee College of Music graduate and my principal instrument is piano. I received formal studies in many advanced levels of piano for my degree. I have both a jazz and a classical background. I have been performing for more than 20 years now. I have performed as leader and sideman for many jazz ensembles. I have been principal pianist for many local and international jazz and Latin jazz artists. I have also worked as accompanist, vocal coach and rehearsal pianist for many jazz singers, show-tune and musical theater artists. As well as been sideman for many pop artists as well. I believe I can teach this subject because I am experienced and qualified in it. I also believe I can teach this subject because I am an experienced teacher and my teaching method focuses on clarity and simplicity.
proofreading
I am a degreed professional (B.F.A.) and have been writing concepts, policies, lyrics, jingles, spots, posters, brochures and copy for advertising firms, non-profit peace and aid foundations and political campaign image specialists. I also worked many years as creative staff with various theatrical companies doing text interpretation, relevant era & time period sociology and cross-referencing of related texts and literature. In the process, during in which, I took certified courses in dramaturgy and playwriting. This complemented my specialization as lyricwriter/songwriter and musical playwright, the area of where I got my degree in Berklee. I've always been involved in the fine arts and have many years of experience as a creative professional. I have solid writing skills and I am passionate about writing. My method for teaching good comunication through writing is easy, simple, clear, pragmatic and practical. I know I can

voice (music)
I am a Berklee College of Music graduate. Early in my career I started out as a singer/bandleader and went on the road singing for many years. As a music degree professional I focused on other areas that I considered my weaknesses, like piano, composition and arranging but singing was my first love and my first contact to music. I have continued singing for recordings and also coached other singers in recordings for songs, jingles spots and promos for radio and T.V. In total I have been performing for more than 20 years now. I have performed as leader and sideman for many ensembles. Lately, I do more work behind the scenes as teacher, accompanist, vocal coach and rehearsal pianist for many jazz singers, pop singers, show-tune and musical theater artists. I believe I can teach this subject because I am experienced and qualified in it. I also believe I can teach this subject because I am an experienced teacher and my teaching method focuses on clarity and simplicity.
