 About John:
I'm confident I can help you meet your goals. I've been blessed to live a complicated and exciting life, and to have had an excellent education. I've had many jobs in diverse industries, I've interacted with people from all walks of life and every corner of this beautiful planet, and I've discovered I have a gift for communicating across the many gaps which divide people. Thus I'm certain I can find a way to reach out to virtually any student and find a way to connect him to the subject at hand. I feel that, because of my experience and my outlook on life, I can be especially helpful to two types of struggling student. One is the underachiever, the talented student with numerous interests who isn't challenged in his educational situation. I understand him because I am him. The other is the disinterested student who can't seem to grasp the importance of his studies. It is this last that I am most interested in, as I am convinced I can transmit my passion for knowledge to him. As a teacher of the guitar, I offer two further qualifications. One is that I have had the great fortune to have learned to play incorrectly the first time around. In starting over and retooling my approach, I learned the paramount importance of good technique and how to build. The second is that, through that same experience of rebuilding, I discovered the cardinal rule of mastering a musical instrument: to learn how to play well, one must learn how to practice well.

Learn More About John's Experience:
grammar
My qualifications to teach grammar are extensive. I displayed an aptitude for language at a very early age - prior to my memories of doing so, in fact. I was able to read before entering school, and my father tells me, and everyone else who will listen, that this ability was largely self-taught. In first grade, I was reading at a sixth grade level, and was prone (again, according to my father) to lecturing my family at the dinner table on the rudiments of phonics. First grade and already tutoring! Throughout school I excelled at all endeavors pertaining to language, including spelling and composition. The latter came quite readily to me, not least because I had (and continue to have) an intuitive grasp of proper grammar and usage. This skill has been fortified by my excellent education, which included four years of Latin and a demanding collegiate Great Books curriculum, culminating in a B.A. in English. Learning the grammar of a foreign language is an excellent way of heightening one's command of one's own language's grammar, as is deciphering texts from different eras in which different rules of grammar prevailed. Throughout my life, friends, coworkers, and supervisors, aware of my skills, have come to me for assistance in refining the various writings which their school and work situations have required them to produce. They have typically been delighted with the results, and I have always found assisting them rewarding. I am now building a career and a portfolio as a freelance writer, and editors often compliment me on how infrequently my submissions require emendation. The above makes me confident that I can be helpful to virtually any student and can tutor capably at any level.
