 About Efe:
To put it simply: I want to make a difference doing what I love. When I graduated from college, I embarked on the real world with wide-eyes and a yearning to change things for the better. I had learned much about myself in college, but I had missed the bandwagon in ‘finding the perfect job’. Upon moving back home, I applied for a variety of positions, and finally settled on ‘GED Instructor’. A GED school in DC seemed like a perfect place for me; I would teach math & science at the bilingual school. I quickly learned it was sink or swim and I was off to a steady dog paddle. With little guidance from the administration, I established curricula for the charter school’s science & math programs, organized my classroom and developed lesson plans. I had no formal experience, but a desire to do my best. I knew that our students were not your archetypical students. They had tried public school but for an array of reasons (juvenile detention, parenting, substance abuse, etc.), had not graduated. They were whom society considered the worst of the worst, but to a sanguine woman from Loudoun County, they were faultless. Never in my life could I have imagined a more rewarding job with such prodigious employee benefits. I discovered that teaching is a career where you can invest directly in others and subsequently, yourself. I didn’t teach for long, but I loved every minute of it. I want to learn how to teach and I aspire to do it where it’s needed most. So, here I am, recently out of college and new to Texas. Why would you want me as your tutor? Let me share this with you: A former professor once described me as a “modern-day heroine who awakens the best in all of us.” I am still humbled by his words and almost shied away from using them in this application; however, this (perhaps slight hyperbole) embodies a description of my most reputable qualities. I can think of no better ability that helps me succeed as a teacher, than my leadership and charisma.

piano
I love keys! Let me start by saying that I have been playing piano since I was 6 years of age. I started out with the Bastien series and quickly progressed through the young and intermediate series. Ah, the joys of Hanon, Bach and Fur Elise. By eighth grade I was accompanying our school choir and jazz bands. My lessons continued through my first year of high school, and after that I began playing at my home church (accompanying, Sunday solos and led our Praise Band). I decided to continue my studies throughout college, studying classical (8 semesters) and jazz piano (3 semesters). Throughout the collegiate years (I graduated in 2007), I continued to play on the side, in one of our college praise bands. I prefer to work with beginners, of any age. It's where I feel most comfortable, and think that we can have the most fun. If you're looking for an instructor who is knowledgable, reliable, fun and invested -- you've found me :D I look forward to meeting y'all!
