Math Textbook Editor, Former Teacher, and MIT Graduate...
I grew up in Chicago's south suburbs, then went to the East Coast for college. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a major in Cognitive Science and a minor in Writing, I earned a Masters degree in Teaching Mathematics from Tufts University.
I taught in high schools in Massachusetts and Virginia, so I have classroom experience teaching Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. I also have previous tutoring experience with Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2.
My day job for the past seven years has been editing math textbooks for grades 6-12. I have personally worked on a number of the books currently used in math classrooms, and I'm at least familiar with most of the rest. I know (or can quickly figure out) what the books are trying to do, what they assume, and what they skip over.
I believe one of my greater strengths as a tutor is the ability to find a trouble spot and formulate similar problems (that can be solved!) on the fly, then ramp them up as necessary. I'm also fairly comfortable with the features available on graphing calculators and even some computer software.
