ESL/ESOL
I am a certified instructor of "English as a Second Language" by Literacy Volunteers of America. My education has been extended by workshops in phonics, cultural differences, simpler and more successful methods of teaching. I continue to update my knowledge and have successfuly taught English to foreign students and some have remained friends. You and I might first exchange ideas and as I learn what your needs are I plan my teaching around what system might work best for you I'm understanding and patient and together we'll build up your confidence and make learning a positive and pleasant experience. We'll also have fun because you will become familiar with the way Americans really talk sometimes, learning slang terms we use. If I say to you, for example, "No Dice," I may not be talking about actual "dice." Or, if I ask you if you "want to get into a pool," I might not mean a swimming pool. You can do it, and I'd like to help you.

grammar
I write stories for children and young adults and being knowledgeable in grammar is important for my success. My education explained how appropriate grammar usage might illustrate with words what I want the reader to visualize, to feel. I was also a proofreader and copy editor for a national magazine. Correct grammar usage is necessary in such a career, because grammar must not just tell, it must SHOW. For example, using words like "wispy hair, the color of pale cornsilk," helps the reader visualize what I see when I put words to paper. Another example, "I watch the sun's reflection glisten like tiny diamonds on the rippling stream." Helping someone else to learn grammar correctly, to clearly illustrate their message, is how I'd like to help you, to teach you, what I know. To learn takes patience, and to teach takes patience. I have an abundance.

phonics
I learned to read by the Phonics system. Phonics is the sounding out of words, letter by letter, because each letter of the alphabet has its distinctive sound, or sounds. Some letters may have more than one sound, for example, "P" has the sound of "PUH" as in the name PETER. But "P" can also have the sound of "FFF" when it is grouped with an "h" as in the word "PHONE." Once phonics is mastered, there is no word you cannot attempt to sound out, to learn how to pronounce correctly. Phonics is of immense help in learning how to spell a word you aren't familiar with, for example, "bat." Once you are familiar with the letter sounds you can many times spell a word correctly. It is the most accurate form of learning to read, in my opinion, that has been devised. I have used phonics in teaching ESL (English as a Second Language)and my Korean student and friend built up her confidence as she used phonics to help her learn English. A teacher must have patience, must have a positive sunny attitude. That is who I am. Learning is fun if you let it. I love to teach. I'd like to help you learn, to see you grow.

proofreading
My career was in copy editing and proofreading. I proofread galleys (first draft printing) and then proofread through each stage of the article until it was ready for publication.I am also a writer and proofreading is necessary in preparing a story or article for submission to a publisher. We will work together so you will become proficient in using proofreading marks, and after I show you how proofreading is done, applying the proofreading symbols where applicable, we'll proofread and you or I can insert the necessary proofreader marks. Please flood me with questions because I want you to understand what you are learning and of course I'll be your guide as needed. I have extensive knowledge in grammar and English and if you need some guidance while we proofread I can help. I like proofreading, and after our initial meeting we can decide how best to work together, and how I can meet your needs. I like to teach, and not to worry, I'm extremely patient. I'm a positive person, so we'll make it a light and pleasant experience.
