David: |
I am currently pursuing a M.S. degree in Counseling. I have tutored students of all ages for the past five plus years, mainly in Algebra (I and II), Geometry, English (grammar, writing, and as a second language), and Spanish. I have taught English as a Second Language classes here and in Mexico, as well as a High School Entrance Exam preparation class. I have studied many subjects related to humanities and social sciences. I intend to become a high school or community college counselor and work in the field of college admissions. Please let me know if I can help in any way. Thanks.

David's Experience:
ESL/ESOL
|
I recently worked in the ESL Center at American River College (Los Rios district). As a tutor/teaching aide in the center, I tutored, taught individual lessons, and led practice conversation sessions (vocabulary, phrases, and thematic discussions) with English learners, who were enrolled in the college. I corrected the in-class exercises, which the students completed during their visits to the ESL lab, and helped English learners of all different ages (18-70) and cultural backgrounds reach their goal of becoming proficient in the English language by answering their questions and giving them advice on how to practice the language. I developed a rapport with many students, who in turn requested additional personal help and advice. I was able to use my knowledge of the Spanish language to help some students better understand English vocabulary and phrases.
During the summer of 2006, I taught 4 English classes (about an hour each) a day to students ages 5- 23 in a rural village in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. I practiced conversations with the older students and taught formal classes to the 80 or so students between the ages of 5 and 15. The younger class learned English vocabulary, phrases, interactions, pronunciation, and how to write a basic biography. I practiced conversations and discussed various issues with the older group. With the help of Learning Enterprises, a program established to build relationships between countries and to instill the love of learning around the world, I was able to work with the town government to offer these classes to everyone interested in attending.

grammar
|
I have tutored and perfected my English and Spanish grammar over the past decade. In order to be an ESL tutor, I had to pass an exam. I used my grammar knowledge while tutoring and teaching English learners over the past two years. I also taught a standardized test preparation class, in which grammar and syntax were often a focal point. I have always been a good writer and can explain the various grammatical concepts. Please let me know what else I would need to do in order to demonstrate my proficiency in grammar, which I more or less mastered in 8th grade.

proofreading
|
I can and have proof-read people's essays (also can do it in Spanish). I have briefly taught writing strategies to students. I have taken the AP English Language and Literature classes, as well as many other writing-intensive courses at Stanford University. Please let me know if I need to do anything else to demonstrate my proficiency in proof reading.
