Hello There!
My name is Alex. I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and now live in beautiful Southern California. I'm an active musician (primarily jazz-funk bass and guitar) with a love of philosophy, mathematics, and the sciences. Below are some qualities that, I feel, allow me to better serve as an instructor and mentor:
High School: I graduated Salutatorian of my class in 2004 with a 4.55 weighted (4.0 unweighted) GPA. I was then granted a full scholarship to Louisiana State from a National Science Foundation-based research program for undergraduates.
University: At LSU, I studied Physics with concentrations in Astronomy and Mathematic while conducting astrophysics research on black holes in the LA-STEM research scholars program. While in the program I also served as a tutor in the Math lab. After a post-hurricane Katrina semester abroad in Budapest, Hungary, I decided to experience life elsewhere and moved to Southern California.
Recent: In the past year I have worked as an Instructor for the Orange County Department of Education's Outdoor Science School. My job entailed instructing 5th and 6th grade students in environmental education in the San Bernardino Mountains. I have since worked as Nature Coordinator at a camp for disabled persons, also in the mountains.
Musical: I have over a decade's playing experience on guitar, and more than half of that on bass guitar as well. With experience teaching on both instruments, I enjoy spreading my passion for music to others.
Teaching Style: In short, my instruction style is relaxed and informal, but with no wasting time. I feel that the mind must not be tense to be fully attentive and prefer to work at the student's pace, leaving no questions unanswered. I enjoy discussing topics in plain and simple English, to allow for a fundamental understanding of the material.
I sincerely hope this has given you, the reader, some insight into the capacity I may serve as an instructor. Thank you for your time and good luck! |
