About Melissa:

My name is Mrs. Bailey and I'm a high school math teacher. I have been teaching math for 8 years. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics and also a second major in Computer Science. I earned my degree at West Texas A&M University in 1999. Math is my favorite subject! So I spend a lot of time working problems and looking for new ways to teach math. In addition to teaching at a public school, I also do private tutoring at home. The students I have tutored are elementary, middle-school, high school, and college students. Working one-on-one has been very successful! Students come to me for help preparing for a specific test, for example, and have left feeling confident knowing their material. Some of the elementary aged students I tutored were in a special education math class at their school. After working with them for about three months they were all placed in a grade-level math class the following year. Working with college students has been rewarding. Many of the students I work with are those who have been out of school for a while and need to be reviewed on basic math and algebra. When they first show up they are usually feeling very self-conscious about their level of understanding. After a few sessions they begin to gain some confidence and are making the grade! Currently I am teaching 9th grade algebra students and a senior level class of students who are studying to pass the state math test so they can graduate. My teaching style is very hands-on and visual. I like to draw pictures and/or use anything "real" that makes a connection to a problem. It's important to me to see the student work problems so I can see where their understanding (or lack of understanding) is. I always try to give them shortcuts ,if there are any, and simple ways of remembering rules. I believe I have a way of teaching that helps students understand better. I enjoy teaching math. Seeing the students finally understand the concepts is what makes my job worth it!
