About
Heather: |
|
Hello!
My name is Heather and I would love to help you or your child learn! I have tutored over 100 students in areas like math, spelling, English, and writing up through approximately 8th grade. I know what it is like to struggle with a subject (for me it was high school algebra), so I approach all tutoring opportunities with a certain amount of empathy. I am patient, energetic and try to find new and interesting ways to present information. I am currently pursuing my Masters degeree in Special Education and have several years experience working with students with disabilities. I firmly believe that there is no such thing as a stupid child, they just need a different way of learning. It is my goal to find that. |

As a tutor, I have worked with over 100 students ranging in age from 4-14 in subjects such as math, reading, spelling, and writing. I feel that these are subjects that I am comfortable teaching, and that would be able to have a significant impact on any students learning. I have a solid knowledge of basic math skills, including basic geometry and pre-algebra. I have always excelled in the areas of reading, writing and spelling.
Beyond my subject knowledge, I belive that it is my ability to work with children that will make me a wonderful tutor in this area. I absolutely adore working with children, and am very patient. I understand what it is like to struggle with a subject, and I love that moment in a childs eyes when they finally "get it". That look is what drives me.

special needs

I have worked in a variety of areas pertaining to Special Education. I have worked in a respite setting as a caregiver, as well as in an in-home setting. As an in-home care provider I was not only responsible for the care of children with Autism, but was trained in Applied Behavior Analysis, and ran an ABA program within a home. I am currently a Certified Recreation Therapy Specialist, working as the Aquatics director at a school for students with disabilities. During a typical day I treat students with Autism, Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation, and a variety of other physical and mental disabilities. I am also currently in the process of recieving my Master's degree in Special Education.

study skills
|
Test taking is never fun. Ever. But, given the right skills, it doesn't need to be so frightening. Throughout my education I have developed a variety of ways to study successfully. I have always tested well on standardized tests, and I believe that it is because of good test taking skills, not just information recall. I definately believe that all students have a way to study for learning, it's just a matter of finding the way that works!
