 About Tanya:
I currently work as a Department Coordinator for National Geographic and have had a variety of experience in the television industry. However, I have had prior experience teaching, tutoring, and mentoring youths. I am looking to merge my interests in video production and teaching later in my career and feel this opportunity would be a wonderful complement to this endeavor. I strongly believe in the talents and power that today’s youth hold, and want to teach them how to harness it to not only benefit themselves, but also their communities. After moving to D.C. in 2002, I had the privilege to work as a Boarding Instructor for the Schools for Educational Evolution and Development (SEED Public Charter) in Southeast D.C. One main challenge was transforming the abundant energy today’s youth have into more positive channels. I am confident that this opportunity with your organization will reinforce the knowledge I have gained as well as expose me to new and challenging situations. My main responsibilities included managing a household of ten to eleven middle school girls. The students lived at the school throughout the week and went home on the weekends. Each day I taught an hour-long class on “life skills” which exposed my students to the challenge of encountering the world around them and defining their place in it. For instance, I noticed the overwhelming amount of students who liked songs with what I felt were sexually explicit lyrics. During one Life Skills class we compared Chingy’s “Holidae Inn” to Blackstar’s “Brown Skinned Lady” and discussed the contrasting portrayals of African-American womanhood. About once a month each grade level cohort would have a closed campus weekend when students would stay on campus until Saturday evening. Boarding Instructors were expected to plan culturally enriching activities and outings. One weekend I chose to introduce my students to West African culture. We spent an evening in Adams Morgan at a West African restaurant and bought cloths at a local African store to wear at our traditional African drumming and dance workshop the next day. These creative approaches were balanced out with more practical experience. I was responsible for monitoring my student’s daily activities and behavior, setting a high standard of maturity and creative problem solving when disagreements arose. I monitored their study hall and academic success as well as acted as the main liaison between their parents and academic instructors. I created and implemented various incentive and academic study programs to maintain a positive interest in their grades. Everyday I tracked and documented my students’ behavior in order to generate report cards at the end of the academic quarter. But perhaps most importantly, I had the honor of being a mentor, mother, teacher, and sometimes social worker (all rolled into one) for my students. I have always been curious to observe and learn how young individuals encounter and then connect with their world. I am confident that my prior experiences make me a qualified candidate for this position. Sincerely, Tanya
