About Claire

Hello:My name is Claire Frances and this is my WyzAnt profile for tutoring. My teacher training experience includes working at several schools in Thailand to teach English for both private and public middle schools. I love the English language and hope my enthusiasm has a positive effect on my students. My background in education includes a B.A. degree from the University of Madison-Wisconsin in Comparative Literature and Spanish. I studied Portuguese for one year in Brazil where I also tutored ESL. In San Francisco I tutored homeless students after school, taught adult literacy and ESL to Spanish speakers; and instructed for internet and PC users. I have produced several video presentations and a hands-on Internet accessible e-book.My most recent training in Thailand stressed language immersion. I believe language proficiency in class can be reproduced both formally and informally in context; for instance, social settings and conversation practice via the Internet or in-person can function to improve learning skills. My personal interests vary from knitting to reading, and blogging. I am committed to volunteering in communities where I have lived. Thank you for considering me as a WyzAnt tutor. More On Claire's Subjects

  • ESL/ESOL

I taught for six months in Thailand (9/07-3/08) on a volunteer, work and train basis with several schools and a monastery, supported by several organizations. It offered a chance to teach English as a second language to students grades 1-12. The monastery was a 3-week training program, followed by secondary English teacher work at a public high school; and a substitute English teacher position at a private school in Thailand, Satit Bilingual School, where some classes were taught for other subjects such as math and science to primary and secondary school children. Previous, in Oakland, California (2002), I tutored low-income students at a long term housing residence. This was an organized tutoring program where grammar and secondary school students received homework assistance in all the basic academic subjects taught in public education. I have taught adult literacy and ESL to Spanish speakers and low-income persons. I tutored Spanish speakers for the organization Refugee Transitions in San Francisco for six months, working with new immigrants out of their homes. While a student abroad in Brazil (1990) I tutored individuals for English language learning at their work, and individually. I also assisted with an organization, Rede Mulher (Women's Network) on an internship basis for one year where I was responsible for translating literature to assist the librarian and outreach workers, as well as participating to translate between employers and the general public.
