About
Christina: |
My education, experience and teaching style make me the ideal tutor for you/your child. I have a Master's degree in Public Policy and a B.A. with dual majors in International Economics and Spanish. I have worked in the U.S. and internationally tutoring both children and young adults. Additionally, when working for the World Bank, I served as a learning coordinator and taught ESL, grammar and proofreading, as well as some computer applications, to adults.
As a lifelong student, mother, former policy analyst, professional trainer/facilitator, I have gained a good understanding of how people learn and how to effectively respond to these diverse learning styles. I enjoy learning and teaching in a fun and constructive environment and will work hard to ensure that learning is a positive and rewarding experience that builds upon each individual's unique and innate strengths.

Christina's Experience:
ESL/ESOL
|
ESL: I have extensive experience tutoring both adults and children in ESL, both as a volunteer (for the Refugee Resettlement Organization and JMU's service department) and in paid positions (for the Ministry of the Interior in Argentina and at the World Bank). I've lived and studied in several countries throughout Latin America, and worked closely with governments and people in the region, so I feel I am uniquely able to work with people of diverse backgrounds, cultures and languages. I also speak Spanish fluently and French proficiently, which allows me to understand different language learning styles and adjust my teaching style accordingly.

grammar
|
Grammar: In addition to having the required educational background to teach English grammar, I am a published writer several times over, proving that I can apply what I have learned. I also have several years experience teaching grammar to native and non-native English speakers. One of the college-level students I tutored was able to lift her English Grammar & Composition grade from a "D" to a "B+" after working with me for a few months.
|
proofreading
|
Proofreading: As many papers as I have had published, I have proofread and edited many more. As an analyst at the World Bank, proofreading was an essential part of my job and one in which I did very well, as evidenced by the performance awards I received every year. I also have a proofreading/editing certificate from the USDA and special training in the subject area from the World Bank.

study skills
|
Study Skills: Study skills are absolutely necessary to succeed in life and must be acquired as a lifelong habit. I graduated from my Master's program at the top of my class due to the study skills I obtained over a lifetime of learning and education. I have taught others how to go about honing this skill by organizing themselves and their work; even in high school people were asking me how to become better organized. I volunteer with elementary and middle school children to teach study skills and personal organization.
