Background Check Information

The results of a criminal background check and Social Security number verification provide students and parents with an additional metric to consider when choosing a safe and qualified local tutor. To provide this service to the WyzAnt community, we have partnered with LexisNexis, one of the largest and most respected background check providers in the country.

How It Works

As requested by a tutor, student, or parent, LexisNexis will run a background check covering the final disposition of the following:

• 1) Social Security number verification
• 2) All felony convictions within the past seven (7) years
• 3) All sex crime convictions (misdemeanor or felony) within the past seven (7) years
• 4) Misdemeanor convictions within the past (3) years for the following offenses:
  • Crimes of violence, injury, and threats (including weapon possession, theft, violent crimes)
  • Crimes that constitute actions that may be dangerous to children (including domestic crimes, drug possession and distribution)

Since the background check covers federal, state, and county records for adults, offenses for minors may not appear during a background check. In order to protect a tutor’s privacy, the results of a background check are only reported to WyzAnt on a pass/fail basis.

Ordering a Background Check

A background check may be ordered in one of two ways. In both cases, the party ordering the check will be responsible for the fee of $7.99. First, a tutor may elect to run a self background check. This step is optional and may expedite the arrangement of future tutoring lessons. Second, a student or parent may order a background check on a tutor.

What Happens After a Passed Background Check?

Upon notification of a successful background check, WyzAnt will post an icon on the tutor’s profile that details the date of the successful check. Students and parents will be able to see this icon when choosing a tutor. Students and parents may also elect to run a background check at any time at their own expense. When this happens, WyzAnt will communicate this action to the tutor via email and update the tutor’s profile accordingly.

What Happens After a Failed Background Check?

Out of an abundance of caution, WyzAnt will immediately deactivate the profile of any tutor who does not pass a background check or provide consent, if requested. Additionally, we will alert any students the tutor may have contacted while part of the WyzAnt community. In the event that a background check is amended, WyzAnt will reactivate the tutor’s profile and contact any former students upon notification from LexisNexis.
