If you could teach everyone in the world one thing, what would it be?
If I could teach everyone in the world, I would teach them history. History is so important to our lives. We are the past: we are the sum of all events- good, bad, and indifferent- that have happened to us. This guides our actions in the present. This is not just for the individual, but for larger societies as well. How would the United States be different, for example, if it had lost the American Revolution, or if the Spanish had founded the colonies in North America? Either way, the United States would not be the way we know it. The only way we can understand who we are and how we got to be that way is by studying the past. Similarly, we must study others the way we would study ourselves. Our failures in Iraq were caused by having limited knowledge of who they are and what they stand for. It's another way to see how countries have developed over the years. The most important reason is to learn from people's mistakes, so that these mistakes aren't made again. History lets us learn from past mistakes and allows us to make rational judgments of what systems work and don't. There are so many reasons why history is important. You study the history of every subject to see where it's methods came from. The progressions of most countries into modernity follows different paths and this results in different societies and cultures. You cannot get to where you are going without knowing where you have already been.
