Being a good tutor isn’t just about being knowledgeable; it’s about being approachable. If being a peer tutor has taught me anything it’s that no one is ever finished learning. Being a peer tutor gives a person a certain level of humility that you just can’t get from a teacher. But it’s not just humility that students gravitate towards, it’s also being able to build on the knowledge that a student already has. I’ve had so many tutors that were PhD candidates that feel like it’s necessary to try and reteach an entire subject even if that’s not what’s necessary. Being able to take a student’s knowledge of a subject and improve or perhaps even build upon it is a skill I believe all tutors should have, because that’s what helps to build the students confidence. Because, as well all know, believing that you can do something is half the battle.
