I believe that it is vital to the learning process that students be given homework that pertains specifically to the most recent tutoring session. I also suggest a that separate binder or notebook be kept for the tutoring sessions. I do keep in mind that students might be busy with their class-assigned homework so I try to keep it light, but make clear the link to their doing better with their school homework. The greatest benefit of this practice is that the student will be doing some math every day, and will come into the next tutoring session focused, even when there are class cancellations. The student's preparedness for the tutoring sessions also acts as a gauge for other factors that might be affecting their learning; for example, organization and study skills.
