As a relative new-comer to WyzAnt, I have been surprised to find that most of my students in high school math and science do not have texts at home and are totally unfamiliar with navigating the web versions when they are available. Has independent study gone out of fashion? Is recourse to text-books seen as the last refuge of neanderthals? Many of the modern texts are beautifully presented, although the math texts can err a bit on the pompous side at times, so I see their relegation to class-rooms only as a bad thing. Fortunately, I've found that schools usually retain a librarian who can be very helpful when he/she recovers from the shock of being engaged. I would be interested in the views of my colleagues on this topic, since I am not sure that I am not missing some modern wonder that has really made text-books superfluous.
