Teaching students naming rules in general chemistry is not always easy. Most of us haven't seen this material in years and need to be prepared to answer any questions the student have. Here are a few tips and tricks that I find help students remember how to name. Binary: Metal - Nonmetal : Is the metal a transitional metal? Yes- used roman numerals to indicate charge of the cation, anion - ide. No name cation, Anion - ide. Nonmetal - Nonmetal: Use Prefix to name (mono, di, tri, ect.) and then Prefix-Anion-ide. I will post a complete set of naming rules for a complete set including Acids, Polyatomic ions, ect.
