There's an old piece of public speaking advice that I believe works with writing assignments. “Tell 'em what you're going to tell 'em, tell 'em, and then tell 'em what you you told 'em" In other words, always lead your reader with a firm hand through your writing-- don't allow your reader to get lost. First, make sure the reader knows what your composition is about. Next, do a thorough job explaining your point in such a way that even someone who has never heard of your topic can follow your explanation. Always give concrete examples. Finally, remind the reader in a concise way what the gist of your paper is. No matter what, remember that you must take the lead and guide the reader!
