On Becoming a Tutor

In 1860, Florence Nightingale published her Notes on Nursing. In her preface, she states, “If, then, every woman must at some time or other of her life, become a nurse, i.e., have charge of somebody's health, how immense and how valuable would be the produce of her united experience if every woman would think how to nurse. I do not pretend to teach her how, I ask her to teach herself, and for this purpose I venture to give her some hints.” Even 150+ years later, her words of wisdom still apply. Now, I’m not equating myself with Florence Nightingale, but I have practiced her philosophy in teaching. Each student has the seeds of his or her own success. My job, as a tutor, is to nurture those seeds of success by giving hints, tips, suggestions, and clarifying or explaining a concept in a different way or making connections that were missing.
