I refer to my experiences in tutoring as adventures because of the diversity of the students I serve. For over 15 years I worked with Hispanic students in an ESL classroom. These students came from Peru and Mexico. Variety IS the spice of life! In the years since I left the high school campus, I have taught English skills to teenagers from Taiwan, Austria, Spain and Slovakia. In return, they have taught me a thing or two about their culture. Perhaps the working relationships I developed with adult students from overseas have yielded the most rewarding assignments in ESL. An executive and his wife from China were in the U.S. temporarily and I was assigned as their trainer. We worked on accent reduction, vocabulary and workplace dialogue. In their evaluation of my work I earned high ratings and very positive feedback from this couple. In turn, I thought they were prize students.
