Reading requires a number of skills that are developed in the following order: phonemic awareness (7 fundamental tasks are involved in phonemic awareness), decoding, fluency, and comprehension.
If a student fails in any one of these skills they are going to have difficulty with reading (and later literature/composition when they have to write about what they have read.)
If you or your child are struggling with reading, reading comprehension and/or writing about was read, consider a dyslexia consultation (records review) or dyslexia screening (records review with some testing). A consultation can be done via phone with either
mail, e-mail, or fax and does not require meeting in person.
Dyslexia affects 20% of the random population, according to the National Institutes of Health. THAT IS ONE IN EVERY FIVE PEOPLE! 1 in 5! Most people don't know they have dyslexia.
Even if you don't think there is dyslexia, talk to a reading specialist who understands the fundamentals...
Three weeks ago I started tutoring a new student. In the initial session I learned he hated science. Just three weeks later, he exclaimed more than once, "This is fun!" He asked to repeat experiments & also asked to do EXTRA experiments!
It is so rewarding to see him enjoying learning!
