I have had the unique pleasure of working with both heritage (native Spanish speakers) and non heritage speakers throughout my 19 years of teaching. When I started on this journey I was a Linguist right out of graduate school who was trying to do her civic duty in her community. Little did I know then that this would be an exciting and rewarding way of life; a journey. I later dedicated my time to exploring the language issues confronted by numerous bilingual Spanish speakers. In my classes I would share with them valuable linguistic information that facilitated their understanding of the linguistic obstacles they faced in Spanish courses designed for non heritage speakers. I delivered all the grammar in Spanish using vocabulary that they had acquired and used since childhood. Later, I worked on their literacy skills in Spanish (see Stephen Krashen's research).
