This summer (2012), I had the honor of being asked to tutor at the Rocky Mountain Camp for Dyslexic Kids, a daycamp in Indian Hills. The camp itself is set on 9 acres of beautiful pines. The children, ages 5 to 13, get 4 hours of intense academic tutoring and 4 hours of intense play. The academic tutoring specifically addresses the unique learning needs of dyslexic students. Intense play includes kayaking, horseback riding, drama, bouldering, mountain bike riding, and Colorado Adventures. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this program to any student with dyslexia. The children made great progress using the Orton-Gillingham approach and absolutely loved the camp.
There is also The Durango Mountain Camp every summer for older children located in Durango, CO. It too provides intensive one-on-one Orton-Gillingham based language training for professionally diagnosed dyslexic youngsters ages 11-17 (day campers 8-13.)
My next adventure will be to visit the Liberty School (for dyslexic kids) in Durango. I'll update here, so stay tuned.
