If I could go back in time and give my younger self one piece of academic or professional advice, what would it be?
Set time aside everyday for reading and exercising!
It can be done, by riding a stationary bike and reading, simultaneously! I feel deprived if I don’t get to read and ride every day. An e-book makes it easy to always have a book handy. At any given time I have at least two books on my device. And, an added advantage to e-readers is that you can set the print size to whatever’s comfortable for you while pedaling. Multi-tasking is a must for most folks. I teach full-time, foster abandoned dogs, and do handicrafts (sewing, knitting, crocheting), not to mention the ever-necessary housecleaning and cooking. My reading while riding routine fits in nicely into a busy day. Besides the opportunity to ‘meet’ a variety of curious characters and ‘travel’ to locales around the world and beyond, reading is a catalyst for lifelong learning. The more you read, the more you know, and, the more you want to know! Set a goal, I started modestly, pedaling for 10-15 minutes, but as my endurance grew, so did my motivation to pedal more. The bonus: more time to read … up to an hour each day!
