I am writing about the technique of translating the text as a means of internalizing the meaning. This is an old method of teaching reading comprehension and I have recently begun to use it again with success. I have students who are reading Romeo and Juliet, for example. I have the students rewrite a particular passage or speech in their own words as a way of understanding the meaning. Likewise, I am teaching Huck Finn and I am having the students rewrite the language from the dialect to their own. This is increasing understanding and it is a skill that the students will internalize for themselves and use when confronted with other difficult literature.
