Tools for long distance tutoring
Sometimes it is hard to find a tutor that is nearby and affordable. Have you ever heard of join.me? This is my favorite free screen sharing programs that allows the tutor or student to see the other's screen.
Here is a little example of how it works:
Today I was helping a student edit their paper online. Basically my student sent me their document and followed along as I edited it. Then my student was able to give feedback and make changes of their own. Join.me eliminates sending emails with attached documents over and over again. Plus, there is a chat box and even the option to do a conference call! This way, if it is a group project, the tutor can speak to everyone at once and work with everyone at once! [Not to mention it is all free!!]
Join.me is also very useful if a tutor is out of town or unable to meet a student. Work can still get done without the issue of transportation - all you need is Internet and a computer, plus the project you are working on.
I have used this application for Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, brochures, websites, and more. It is a useful tool that I strongly encourage everyone to try. You do not have to use it for tutoring. It is suitable for any type of collaboration project where multiple people can join together and create a masterpiece.
