I have no idea how to do this and I have homework on it.

a motor boat can go 24 miles downstream in the same amount of time that it takes to go 12 miles upstream. the boats speed in the still water is 12 mph.
The problem is (2x+1/3)-(x-5/4)=1/2
This is solving rational equations by finding the LCD, but every time i try the problems I get a solution but it does not check out.
how do you solve it?
Can a rational equation have more than one solution? no solution? Give specific examples to support your response.
