Hello, Anna. Maybe I'm answering your question too late. Nonetheless, the question touches on a them that's special to me --- music and language.

Country is a good genre to find "clean" songs, but I want to suggest a jazz song by Diana Krall called "Why Should I Care?". The mood is sad. The song is about a person who is left behind by a boyfriend/lover. The music supports that theme.

Here is a YouTube video of the song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KANG1y5p8eE

Here are the lyrics:

Was there something more I could have done?
Or was I not meant to be the one?
Where's the life I thought we would share?
And should I care?

And will someone else get more of you?
Will she go to sleep more sure of you?
Will she wake up knowing you're still there?
And why should I care?

There's always one to turn and walk away
And one who just wants to stay
But who said that love is always fair?
And why should I care?

Should I leave you alone here in the dark?
Holding my broken heart
While a promise still hangs in the air
Why should I care?

One of my favorites is from "No Strings Attached" called "You Were My Once in a Lifetime" - great harmonies and mood!

You were my once in a lifetime!
Happy ending come true…
Oh, I guess I should have told you, but
I thought you knew.

You said I took you for granted -
That’s the last thing I would do…

I’ll never understand it…
I thought you knew -
I thought you knew my world revolved around you.
My love light burned for you alone.
But you couldn’t see the flame…
Only myself to blame… I should have known…

A heart full of words left unspoken
Now that we’re through
I'd sell my soul to have this silence broken…
And, I thought you knew…
I thought you knew…………

Hello Anna,

I was excited to see your questions as my students and I listen to a popular song once a week.   I would recommend Katy Perry's Firework or Life's A Dance by John Michael Montgomery.
  Good luck on your search.

Dear Anna: I realize I am joining this conversation late in the game. However if you are still looking for songs without profanity to add to your collection, I can suggest a multitude of popular jazz tunes from which to choose. Having worked as a language coach by day and a jazz singer by night in Europe, I have come across some wonderful material that helped me stay at the top of my game in both jobs. For example anything from George Gershwin would be good such as Nice Work, Let's Call the Whole Thing Off, etc. Also look at the songs written by one of the most prolific popular composers of the 20th century, Irving Berlin. Here is a man, whose native tongue was not English but could craft a song that addressed the highs and lows of everyday life. For me, Berlin was a veritable Shakespeare of Tin Pan Alley. Lastly, no song collection with wholesome content would be complete without some of the Beatles' earlier works from their album "Rubber Soul".

With Gershwin, Berlin and the Beatles, you will not only have some of the best in catchy, clever and intelligent songwriting, you will find some of the best examples of idiomatic and grammatical English worthy of learning.

I hope my contribution has been of service.

Hi, Anna. "She's Everything" by Brad Paisley is a popular song. In it he talks about the love of his life, he's very caring and emotional. His voice is very soft spoken and laced with love. And the theme is none other than love itself. Its hard to pick any one section of lyrics.

She's a yellow pair of running shoes
A holey pair of jeans
She looks great in cheap sunglasses
She looks great in anything
She's I want a piece of chocolate
Take me to a movie
She's I can't find a thing to wear
Now and then she's moody

She's a Saturn with a sunroof
With her brown hair a-blowing
She's a soft place to land
And a good feeling knowing
She's a warm conversation
That I wouldn't miss for nothing
She's a fighter when she's mad
And she's a lover when she's loving

[Chorus]
And she's everything I ever wanted
And everything I need
I talk about her, I go on and on and on
'Cause she's everything to me

She's a Saturday out on the town
And a church girl on Sunday
She's a cross around her neck
And a cuss word 'cause its Monday
She's a bubble bath and candles
Baby come and kiss me
She's a one glass of wine
And she's feeling kinda tipsy

She's the giver I wish I could be
And the stealer of the covers
She's a picture in my wallet
and my unborn children's mother
She's the hand that I'm holding
When I'm on my knees and praying
She's the answer to my prayer
And she's the song that I'm playing

[Repeat chorus]

She's the voice I love to hear
Someday when I'm ninety
She's that wooden rocking chair
I want rocking right beside me
Everyday that passes
I only love her more
Yeah, she's the one
That I'd lay down my own life for

And she's everything I ever wanted
And everything I need
She's everything to me
Yeah she's everything to me

Everything I ever wanted
And everything I need
She's everything to me

Either this or any Taylor Swift song, from what I've heard she never curses and her songs are pretty good. :)

Great to discuss metaphors too!

Demi Lovato-Skyscraper  (its trendy and current)

"Skyscraper"

[Verse 1:]
Skies are crying, I am watching
Catching tear drops in my hands
Only silence as it's ending
Like we never had a chance
Do you have to make me feel like
There's nothing left of me?

[Chorus:]
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I'm made of glass
Like I'm made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper
Like a skyscraper

[Verse 2:]
As the smoke clears, I awaken
And untangle you from me
Would it make you feel better
To watch me while I bleed?
All my windows still are broken
But I'm standing on my feet

[Chorus:]
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I'm made of glass
Like I'm made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper
Like a skyscraper

[Bridge:]
Go run, run, run
I'm gonna stay right here,
Watch you disappear
Yeah, oh
Go run, run, run
Yeah, it's a long way down
But I am closer to the clouds up here

[Chorus:]
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I'm made of glass
Like I'm made of paper
Oh Oh
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper
Like a skyscraper

(Like a skyscraper)

Like a skyscraper
Like a skyscraper

Hi Anna. Most of the songs that do not contain any curse words in the lyrics are usually from the country genre. Keith Urban's song "Somebody Like You" is a good pick for analyzing tone, theme, and mood.

His tone is positive and energizing. He is hopeful as you can see in line 3. The theme of this song is moving forward in life and looking for the positive aspects that bring daily happiness. In this cause it is a girl that he loves. The mood is upbeat, feel-good, and refreshing. You can find your own examples by simply picking out the lyrics best suited.

Hope you are a country fan but if not..

"Best of You" by the Foo Fighters is a classic alternative rock song that has strong lyrics with lots of heart and meaning. Much more deep than country, but still clean lyrics and no cursing.

Hope this helps.

-Kayla Carr

There's a new wind blowing like I've never known
I'm breathing deeper than I've even done
And it sure feels good to finally feel the way I do
And I want to love somebody, love somebody like you

And I let go of all my lonely yesterdays
I've forgiven myself for the mistakes I've made
Now there's just one thing the only thing I want to do
I want to love somebody, love somebody like you

[Chorus]
Yea I want to feel the sun shine
Shining down on me and you
When you put your arms around me
You let me know there's nothing in this world I can't do

I used to run in circles going no where fast
I'd take one step forward and two steps back
Couldn't walk a straight line even if I wanted to
I want to love somebody, love somebody like you

Oh here we go now, yeah,
Hey I want to love ya baby,
Oh, hold me now, now

[Chorus]

Sometime it's hard for me to understand
But your teaching me to be a better man
I don't want to take this life for granted like I used to do
I want to love somebody, love somebody like you

I'm ready to love somebody, love somebody like you
Love somebody, love somebody like you

Hey I want to love ya baby

I want to be the man in the middle of the night shining like it's two
Want to be the man that you want to and ever thought on you
Everything I wished for finally found this way
And could be a better man I can see it in your face

Hey I want to love you baby

Mumford and Sons--Anything but Little Lion Man, it is the only one with a curse word, that I can think of.

Hey, Anna!

My new favorite song is Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man".  It's a beautiful song about a guy figuring out that he didn't treat his girl right when he had her.  It's got a very somber quality representing his sadness and remorse about the end of the relationship.  I think it says eveything that a girl wants to hear when a guy has broken up with her.  Here are the lyrics:

Same bed, but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio, but it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you all that it does is just tear me down
Cause my heart breaks a little when I hear your name
And it all just sound like uh, uh, uh

Hmmm too young, too dumb to realize
That I should have bought you flowers and held your hand
Should have gave you all my hours when I had the chance
Take you to every party cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing, but she's dancing with another man.

My pride, my ego, my needs and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes
It all just sounds like uh, uh, uh, uh

Too young, too dumb to realize
That I should have bought you flowers and held your hand
Should have gave all my hours when I had the chance
Take you to every party cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing, but she's dancing with another man.

Although it hurts I'll be the first to say that I was wrong
Oh, I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know
I hope he buys you flowers, I hope he holds your hand
Give you all his hours when he has the chance
Take you to every party cause I remember how much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should have done when I was your man!
Do all the things I should have done when I was your man!

Hope this helps!  Good Luck on your project!
