9x-4=(4x-4)-5x+4

Start by dropping the parenthesis then you will notice the 4s on the right side will cancel. Then add like terms. Get the x terms to one side and the constants to the other (by adding or subtracting the appropriate terms from both sides). Then divide by the coefficient of the x term.
