1 Answer

x^2 + 5x = 4

Add (5/2)^2 to both sides,

(x + 5/2)^2 = 4 + (5/2)^2 = (16 + 25)/4 = sqrt(41)/4

x = -5/2 +/- sqrt(41)/2

Answer: x = -5/2 + sqrt(41)/2; x = -5/2 - sqrt(41)/2
