First, note that percent means per hundred. In this example, for instance, 35% means 35 per hundred. 

That is:     35%   ==>   35%/100%   ==>   35/100

To reduce this fraction into its simplest form, divide both the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common factor:

       Factors of 35:     1, 5, 7, 35

      Factors of 100:    1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100

   35/ 100  =  35÷5 / 100÷5  =  7/20

The simplest way to convert a percent into a decimal is to move the decimal two places to the left. In this case, 35% is converted into a decimal as follows:

     35%   ==>   35.0%   ==>   .35   OR   0.35
