Its homework its just that is multiple choice. You can't get help when you are doing a test.
"For many months, the gigantic struggle then imminent had been painfully discernible to far-seeing men."
Also means:
"For many months, the huge battle now current had been painfully clear to men with vision."
Which also means:
"For men who were paying attention, this huge battle we are now fighting was painfully clear for a long time."
 
I disagree with your answer. Does this explanation help?
I believe the answer is "B" for the following reasons:  the phrase "then imminent", implying that it was bound to happen, and then the verb tense being past perfect, where it began in the past and does not have a solid finish date.
