Hi Kirstin;
You have two different equations...
37+5/6x=42
and
37+5x/6=42
There are many possibilities:

for “37+5/6x=42”

(37+5)/(6x)=42

((37+5)/6)x=42

37+(5/6)x=42

37+5/(6x)=42

for “37+5x/6=42”:

(37+5x)/6=42

37+(5x/6)=42

Which?

Hi Kristin

37+5x/6=42

Let's multiply 6 in both sides, we get

37+5x = 42 *6

Now let's subtract 37 from both sides, we get
5x = 42*6 - 37
 5x = 215

Now let's divide both sides by 5, we get

x = 215/5

x = 43

Now let's check our answer by putting the value of x in the formula,

37+5(43)/6=42
37 + 215 /6 =42
252/6 = 42

Hi Kirstin
37+5/6x=42
I think this is...
37+(5/6x)=42
Let's subtract 37 from both sides...
37-37+(5/6x)=42-37
5/6x=5
5 can also be written as 5/1.
5/6x=5/1
Let's cross-multiply...
(5)(6x)=(5)(1)
30x=5
Let's divide both sides by 30...
(30x)/30=5/30
x=1/6
Let's check our work...
37+5/[(6)(1/6)]=42
37+(5/1)=42
42=42
