Real life application with parabolas?

One of the most common applications of a parabola is a satellite dish. The receiver (or transmitter, as the case may be) is placed at the focal point of the dish (parabola). As the parallel rays enter the dish, they are redirected to the receiver. The same concept applies to the parabolic microphones you see on the sidelines of professional football games - the clear plastic "dishes" you often see.
