655/ 25 = 26 1/5

  655 = 26 * 25 + 5     / 26 quarters + 5 ,has to pay 26 quarters and a nickel

       26 * 25 + 5 = 25 * 25 + 25 +5 = 25 *25 + 30

/ Since has only quarters and dimes, can pay 25
  quarters and 3 dimes.

And since 2 quarters = 5 dimes:

q + d => 6.55
25  3
23  8
21 13
19 18
etc.

Hello Addison,

There is a missing piece of information in this word problem.  We need to know the total number of coins Clara has before we can solve it.

 You should determine the number of coins needed to pay 655 c.
Oh, I see that now.  Glad you could answer it!  :o)
Actually, the number of coins is not necessary.  If we get the number of quarters time 25 ending in 5, all we need to do is add 10 times a number of dimes.

1 quarter + 63 dimes, etc.  as Steve suggests.

Hi Addison;
We need a multiple of 0.25 that results in 6.25.  This is because...
6.55-6.25=0.30
25 quarters=6.25
3 dimes=0.30
total=$6.55

Of course, there are other solutions, such as the quantity of quarters rendering a total of $5.75.  As long as the total value of quarters is $X.25 or $X.75, this will work with any corresponding quantity of dimes.
