x = Pat's height
 
y = Donna's height

Let Pat′s height be x
Let Donna′s height be y
 
Donna is 5 inches shorter than Pat
 
So y=x-5
D= Donna's height
P=Pat's height
 
D=P-5 (Donna's height is 5 inches less)
