I have a question about a practice test!! Why is the correct answer C? I chose B.

The chief health risk from inhaling radon or its daughter products is lung cancer. [ A ] Scientists have concluded that exposure to this carcinogen is the second leading cause of this disease in the United States. [ B ] Major scientific organizations believe it contributes to approximately 12 percent of the incidence in the United States alone. It is true that some research has cast doubt on the likelihood of residential radon accumulations contributing to cancer rates. [ C ] Other larger scale studies contradict the neutral findings. For example, a recent study of 68,000 underground miners who were exposed to high levels of radon shows that they are five times more likely to die of lung cancer than the general population. [ D ] Smokers, whose incidence of lung cancer is significantly higher than the nonsmoking population, are even more at risk if they are exposed to high levels of radon.

Look at the four squares [ ] that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.
Where would the sentence best fit? Click on a square [ ] to add the sentence to the passage.

But this research has been criticized for being based on too few subjects.

Saroi,

A is not correct because it does not include research subjects.

B is a conclusive statement accepted by scientific community and therefore, it is not the correct answer to fit the sentence in question.

C provides some  conclusive information and keeps room for additional research and criticisim.

D provides results of  large scale studies and the research is not criticized, therfore, it is not the right fit.

C is the correct answer where research data is from two few subjects and the sentence perfectly fits in.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Naina!!
Actually, I was confused between B and C.
B is conclusive statement accepted by scientific community.
This supports an idea above-mentioned remark.
Thank you again!!

The sentence is best suited for the placement of [C] because it is referring to the "research" that is taking place.

Thank you, Rachel!!
Yes, "research" is the key word in order to find a correct answer.
Thanks!!

The answer is C because the statement refers to the studies mentioned in the previous sentence. The sentence before C states that some research casts doubt on whether or not radon contributes to cancer. The sentence which needs to be added to the paragraph then adds that this research is flawed because it doesn't have a large enough sample size. If you put it at B, you are referring to the problem with the research before the paragraph even introduces the research itself.

It is easy to understand.
Thanks!!

The sentence before [C] introduces the idea of some doubt, which is consistent with inserting the target sentence, the source of that doubt in [C]. The sentence after [C] would then continue the back and forth dialog by asserting that the problem of sample size introduced in [C] had been addressed and was no longer valid. If you inserted the target sentence in [B], attacking the quality of the research right before acknowledging the agreement among scientists and related organization about the harmfulness of smoking, it suggests they are generally ignorant of research results in their area of expertise or at least tended to ignore its poor quality.

Yes, you are right. This contradicts in the context.
