George is 8 years more than twice the age of his son Tom. If the difference of their ages is 38, how old is George?

Tom's age =x
George' age=2x+8
(2x+8)-x=38
x+8=38
Let's subtract 8 from both sides...
-8+x+8=38-8
x=30=Tom's age
 
George=2(30)+8
George=68
