Hi Carla;

x - 1/3x - 1/2x - 4 = 0
If I understand correctly, this is...
x-(1/3)x-(1/2)x-4=0

This is NOT...
x-(1/(3x))-(1/(2x))-4=0

We must isolate x...
Let's add 4 to both sides...
4+x - (1/3)x - (1/2)x - 4 = 0 + 4

x - (1/3)x - (1/2) x = 4

Let's combine the understood 1/1 preceding the first x, with the 1/3 and 1/2
1 x 3 x 2 = 6.  Let's multiply both sides of the equation by 6...

6(x - (1/3)x - (1/2)x) = 4(6)
6x-2x-3x=24
6x-5x=24
x=24
