what does it mean when you find the sum of a number and divide by the total ?

This sounds like you're trying to find the average of a group of numbers. For instance, suppose you want to find the average age of a group of people whose ages are 16, 18, 23, and 28. First, you sum the numbers: 16 + 18 + 23 + 28. You get 85. Then you divide 85 (the sum) by how many numbers you added together (4). So you divide 85 by 4, which gives you 21.25. Hope this helps!
