I use PEMDAS when I'm trying to remember the steps you take to solve an algebraic equation, i.e., the order of operations .  You solve in this order:

P: parentheses (work inside the parentheses first)

E: exponents (then apply the exponents)

M/D: multiplication/division comes next

A/S: addition/subtraction come last

Hi Alisa,

Always do the part of the equation in teh parentheses first.  You have 20-(9-3), which you'd simplify to 20-6.  The asnswer would be 14.
