It looks like (without parenthesis):
        a
15  - --- = -9
        3

multiply both sides by 3

45 a = -27
subtract 45 from both sides

-a = -72

divide each side by -1

a = 72
Dear C., you have to use parentheses to avoid double reading!!!!

(15 - a) / 3 = - 9

  15 - a
---------- = - 9
     3

15 - a = - 27

- a = - 27 - 15

- a = - 42

  a = 42

Comments

Nataliya,

if using PEMDAS, division comes before subtraction.  So unless the problem was presented with parenthesis, we wouldn't add them.

What do you think?

15 - a/3 = -9

multiply by -3 to get:

-45 + a = 27, then just add 45 to both sides to get:

a = 72

Your Answer is, a = 72
