Hello Terri ,

 

If you find such problems again, you need to keep this in mind:

 

the question is asking for the value of X. So try to move everything except X to one side of the equal sign.

 

Here,  X+2/3 = 4

So to get X alone on the left side, we need to subtract 2/3 from both sides of the equation

 

X+2/3 - 2/3 = 4 - 2/3

 

this becomes   X= 4 - 2/3

 

now if you are having trouble with the subtraction , think of it like this 4 = 3+1 and 1 can be written as 3/3... So 4 can be written as 3 + 3/3

 

Put that in our equation for X

 

 X =   4 - 2/3   =    (3+ 3/3) - 2/3    =    3 1/3
