Five Useful Microsoft Office Shortcuts

Microsoft Office is suite of programs used around the world for office and school work.  The Office suite includes Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.  One of the advantages of using these programs is that they have a lot of features, and you can use them to create a variety of projects in many different styles and formats.  Another advantage is that many of the shortcuts that work in one program work in the others as well, and they haven't changed from one version to the next.     I use Microsoft Office everyday for my job.  I also tutor students who want to improve their skills in one or more of these programs.  There are hundreds of shortcuts.  Most people don't need to know them all (I don't!), but having a few of these in your back pocket.  Here are five of my everyday favorites; they work equally well in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.  Ctrl+X means:  hold down both Control and X.   Ctrl+X... read more

5 Tips to Help Students Avoid the Summer Slump

Read. Pick up something and keep the wheels turning. Keeping fresh on news, or just pleasure reading is a skill that needs to be exercised and worked on regularly. Write. Depending on where you are in your academic career, one thing is fairly certain; you will be required to write the deeper you delve into subjects and years of schooling. Writing is learning on a new level. Research. Research something. Take it beyond Google, and do not rely on Wiki. Anyone can publish on Wiki, and some big mistakes happen there. Research and writing work in tandem, get used to it and have fun with it, after all you will learn something this way (and far into the future). Honing your search skill (Booleans, etc.) will pay you back exponentially one day. Learn something or do something new. Find a new hobby or research (see above #3) something new or do something new after looking into it as long as it's safe of course. Set Attainable... read more

Tutoring for Learner Excellence

In my experience working with learners from various education levels and backgrounds, I understand the feelings of frustrations and concerns that many have when struggling with a subject or studying for a test but not receiving the results you would like or expect. It creates a feeling of helplessness or the sense that you can't overcome or you'll never get it. That's not true. With the right study skills, you can improve your confidence, preparedness, and ability in any area. The keys to learner's success include having clear goals about what you want to achieve, learning effective study tips and strategies, pacing yourself, organizational skills, time management, academic planning and preparation, step-by-step instruction, committment (good work ethic), practice, and building confidence in your ability to improve and achieve your goals. It's said, if you want to succeed, try and try again. That's the only way to do it. If you have questions about assignments or... read more

Favorite educational quote

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. (Aristotle) This quote provokes me never to accept the status quo and always challenge assumptions. It is the thought that through education we never stop learning or seeking after truth and knowledge.

New to WyzAnt Tutoring

Hello! This whole site is pretty new to me, but I wanted to briefly show my interests and experiences, as they are fairly diversified: Sciences: As noted above, most of my experience is with chemistry. Organic Chemistry is my specialty, but I am also familiar with Inorganic Chemistry. I've been a Teaching Assistant for college freshman level courses through upper level chemistry courses. I started off as a Biology/Pre-med major, so courses like Physics and Biology are high on my understanding. Tutoring in most of the sciences will be my highest level of knowledge/experience. Math: I was a mathematics minor as an Undergraduate, so I am very familiar with a fair amount of mathematics divisions. Calculus is fairly fresh, but I am most proficient with Algebra. I have a secret love of the mathematics, so tutoring math in some way would definitely be great. Dance: I just noticed that dance was an option for the "subjects", so I listed it. I am a Lindy Hop dancer... read more

Learning the Computer

There is still a segment of the population that has difficulty with computers or “How to Use”: a software program, the computer as a tool, or taming the beast they see on their desk at work. The first thing I say to comfort my students is that they are not going to break their computer by doing something “silly”. They may get a garbage (or unexpected) response from the program, but that is simply because computers are machines that need to be told what to do. True, computers are excellent at doing things, but computers do not have the level of understanding how to read our minds and do what we want the computer to do. This perceived “dumbness” on the part of the computer presents challenges to even the best tutor. Why, because humans all have different learning styles and: 1. Most students learn differently than you do. 2. Each student learns differently from other students. 3. No one teaching method will effectively reach all students. 4. A tutor cannot... read more

Caring Tutor

Are your children struggling in school? Do you wish your child to do better in school? Are there college students who need extra help? There are many reasons why a student is not at grade level or struggling to stay at grade level, and high school students who graduate with limited English, Reading, and Writing abilities. Sometimes a child has a learning disability (ADHD, Autism, Asperger's) or limited English skills. A student's achievements and self-esteem are the most important things students can receive if they are struggling or has limited English skills. So many students fall through the cracks at school, including my own son, because of several special needs. When we let our students fall through the cracks, the student(s) usually finds himself/herself in trouble. With low self-esteem and believing they cannot do something will allow students to hang around with not so great students. As parents and adult students, we need to strive for the best that is within us all... read more

I Love Tutoring!!

Hello! My name is Kathleen (Kathy). I came across WyzAnt, and I feel like it is exactly what I have been looking for! I have always excelled at all things English. I love spelling, grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, teaching computer skills, etc. I am fascinated by language and by the choices people use to express themselves. I would love the opportunity to help a student feel more confident in all subjects related to English. I also worked as an Executive Assistant for many years, and am very proficient in all Microsoft Office programs, and find them to be a great deal of fun once you get used to them. Technology is moving so fast, and keeping up with the latest software versions is crucial to surviving in today's workplace. I would love to meet you and see if there are some subjects I would be able to assist you with for your future success.

A Life-changing Difference

I will be the first to admit I wasn't always a great student when I was in school. In regular school, my own folks couldn't help me with my homework as neither parent had finished high school. They tried, but it was too much for them. So I really struggled through grade school and then high school. In college I struggled once again. I was smart, but I just couldn't understand some subjects the way they were taught, which honestly seemed all backwards to me. Science was a particularly difficult subject at the time. Try as hard as I might, I just could not seem to make sense of anything I was learning. Then everything changed when a relative suggested I get a tutor. I looked around and found a great tutor. What a difference he made in my life. Suddenly, the things he did to help me made me realize that it wasn't me that had a problem; it was the way the subject was being taught in school. He helped me to create a context for what I had to learn, and gave me a logical order... read more

Summer is an excellent time to brush up on skills!

Summer is a great time to brush up on skills! Studies show that every child benefits from year-long school, but often there is no way to provide a curriculum that works with our vacation schedules. I work with your schedule! If your child could use some extra special quality teaching this summer, even if only for a few weeks, I'm here to help. I have beginning reading and advanced phonics programs, math through algebra II, as well as vocabulary and writing programs designed to help the student stay current or even gain in skills over the summer. I am a credentialed teacher and have years of experience working with students who are struggling and needing intervention. I look forward to hearing from you! Shelley

Maintain skill and knowledge during the summer, start to master upcoming subjects

Some students forget their skills and knowledge of subjects during the summer because they do not practice and receive tutoring. Other students maintain or increase their skill and knowledge during the summer by practicing and receiving tutoring on their subjects(s). To help maintain skill and knowledge level, many parents and students are having me provide tutoring during the summer for one or both of the following reasons: 1. tutoring for reviewing current subjects for practice and maintenance or enhancement of knowledge and skill levels 2. tutoring on upcoming subjects for learning so that when the student starts back after the summer, not only are they still at an enhanced skill and knowledge level for current subjects, but they can master the upcoming subjects from the beginning because they have received a preview and practice during the summer. Starting on May 30, the parents are having me tutor their student(s) in various subjects on one the following... read more
