I recently found out about an interesting app for PC, Android, or Iphone. It's called 123d Catch, and it's made by AutoDesk (the maker of AutoCAD and many other advanced software). The short description is that it combines multiple pictures of an object into a 3d model that can be viewed, exported to AutoCAD or even printed via a 3d printer. It is quite a powerful application to be run on a phone, so it actually uploads the photos you take and combines them into a mesh on their server. It does take a little time for it to upload/process but it is truly a high tech app with lots of possibilities. I've only just started testing it but I can see how interesting it can be and also its many practical applications. I would recommend checking it out. The main site is here http://www.123dapp.com/catch and the intoduction videos can be found here or on youtube http://www.123dapp.com/howto/catch I'm currently working on getting my model from an OK look up to something... read more

Having worked in the architecture industry for around 3 years. I have found many people struggle with being fast with AutoCAD and getting things done on time.   One aspect of AutoCAD that i like to customize to hasten my drafting process is creating and modifying my shortcuts for command. As we know, there are specific commands that we use to draft. C for circle, Rec for rectangle and so forth. Typing in C is obviously faster than typing Circle and Rec faster than Rectangle. However, for commands that doesn't have these short command, we can change it.   A specific thing that i like to do is the command "aliasedit" which allows me to change the shortcut. For example, if i want to shorten the Rec command to "RR", i can type in alias edit, find the command and edit the shortcut.   The thing that would allow me to achieve efficiency is to change all my core commands (the commands that i use most frequently) to a shortcut that... read more

Hello Everyone, In the not to distant future I will have the ability to perform lessons via webcam. The reason for this is that this will make it easier for both myself and the student. In the past, where and when has always been an issue. My current living arrangements do not allow the space to have students, nor is it then environment for it and sometimes the student is in the same boat. This would leave us with finding a public place that would accommodate us and the use of laptop computers and the space needed. Tutoring AutoCAD and Writing are both subjects that can easily be accomplished via webcam and/or application sharing or websites like WebEx for "Webinars" and such. Providing lessons in this manner frees us from the limitations of time in public places or personal space. The most important thing any student should remember is that practice and repetition will increase their understanding of the craft they are learning. From that understanding will... read more
